Unless you live in a lakeside home, towing your boat to the water is the first step in a fun-filled day in the sun. The vehicle that you are towing will affect your driving performance. If you're driving an ordinary consumer vehicle, such as a car, SUV, or even pickup truck, and you've only got a standard class G license for it, make sure that you're rated to tow what you want to tow.

Ideally, a caravan shouldn't weigh more than 85% of the towcar's kerbweight. Most tow trucks now have GPS navigation and tracking systems, on board HD cameras and other modern technology which make the job of getting damage vehicles of any size safely back to the shop.

Generally the type of suspension on the towing vehicle is not important as long as it is firm. Older caravans with over-ride hydraulic or mechanical brakes can be successfully converted to an electric system. For example, if you have a 3,500 lb. hitch and ball mount with a 2,000 lb. trailer ball, your hitch system is limited to the 2,000 lb. trailer ball towing capacity.

It's also important to load your caravan correctly and within its limits. You have to note that when you are driving a tow truck, you are not just driving the truck alone. Well before you hitch a trailer to your vehicle, you need to determine whether it is tow-rated.

But, with patience, you will soon be towing a caravan frequently with confidence and ease, all over Britain and abroad. As a general rule, however, most of the cargo's weight should be toward the front of the trailer. Driving on winding or mountain roads is not difficult if it's done with reasonable care.
